Mary Goodwillie Nelson will be honored as the fourth recipient of a Legacy Award on April 29, during an annual Legacy Award gala.

The award – presented by St. Cecilia Music Center – was created to honor a woman who has helped to expand and enrich the cultural life of the Greater Grand Rapids community.  A long-time supporter of St. Cecilia Music Center, Mary Goodwillie Nelson has shown a firm commitment to supporting many arts organizations and endeavors in Grand Rapids for decades. She was a past board member of Opera Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Grand Rapids Ballet, for which she also served as Board President. Mrs. Goodwillie Nelson has been associated with St. Cecilia Music Center since childhood when she participated in dance recitals in the performance hall.

St. Cecilia Music Center’s mission is to promote the study, appreciation and performance of music in order to enrich the lives of West Michigan residents. True to its purpose SCMC presents concerts by visiting world-class artists, provides music education for all ages through its School of Music, presents  musical activities and community events, and preserves its historical Royce Auditorium, heralded by musicians and audiences alike for superior acoustics.

The festivities on April 29 will include a performance by the Grand Rapids Ballet Junior Company in SCMC’s Royce Auditorium, followed by a dinner and an awards ceremony in the Dexter Ballroom in honor of Nelson. Past recipients have included Helen DeVos, Stella Royce, and Karen Henry Stokes.
