A local distillery is rolling out a historically controversial spirit.

Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers has released Long Road Grand Absinthe, a bright-green, wormwood-infused spirit.

Until recently, absinthe was banned for sale and consumption in many countries, including the U.S., according to Long Road. The wormwood-infused spirit was once thought to cause hallucinations and other negative side effects. However, myths were dispelled over time, and the ban on absinthe was lifted in the U.S. in 2007.

Long Road Grand Absinthe is also made with fennel, star anise, sage and over a dozen other botanicals.

The spirit has the aroma and initial taste of herbal black licorice and is bottled at 125 proof.

Long Road Grand Absinthe is available in 750-ml bottles at all retailers across the distillery’s statewide distribution footprint.
