As my son and I walked into Butch’s Dry Dock in downtown Holland, the outside world quickly faded away. Immediately, our concerns disappeared as the hostess guided us to a stunning table by the window overlooking the city.
It was one of the elegant tables with a beautiful tablecloth that I always admire whenever I walk downtown. So, sitting there, watching all the activity in Holland, felt like a dream come true.
Butch’s Dry Dock was one of only 39 restaurants in Michigan to make Wine Spectator’s 2026 list, so ordering a glass of wine was an obvious choice. Every dinner entrée comes with a suggested wine pairing, which made the decision even easier.
I ordered the 2023 Jax Y3 North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, a fantastic, full-bodied red from California with bold blackberry notes. According to Wine Spectator, the restaurant’s wine list is especially strong in selections from California, France, and Italy.
Meanwhile, my son spotted the Garlic Frites on the starters menu and ordered them. When they arrived, the fries were perfectly hot, and the combination of citrus salt and tarragon aioli made for an outstanding start to our meal.
As we waited for our entrées, we took in the cozy, intimate atmosphere. Calm instrumental music played in the background, servers quietly made sure our water glasses stayed full, and another staff member took the time to explain a bottle of wine they were opening for a nearby table.
We were completely relaxed.
Soon, our waitress brought out the main attractions. My son chose the Ribeye, a generous steak served with potatoes and asparagus. I went with the Filet Mignon, which came with truffle potatoes, mushrooms, and a delightful sauce.
From the very first bite, every taste bud was awakened. Until I finally surrendered—after helping my son finish his sides—the meal remained the highlight of my summer. The steak was cooked to perfection, and I couldn’t stop talking about it.
My son enjoyed his meal just as much, and we eagerly planned our trip the next day to meet the Red Arrows, the elite pilots of Britain’s Royal Air Force. It was one of those evenings when great food, great conversation, and quality time together made everything else seem unimportant.
Overall, Butch’s Dry Dock in Holland is the perfect destination for a night filled with exceptional wine, outstanding food, and meaningful connection. Just be sure to make a reservation—you won’t want to miss it.
