Mamma Mia! Picnic Pops kicks off tonight

The music of ABBA kicks off the Grand Rapids Symphony’s Picnic Pops outdoor summer concert series tonight.

Arrival from Sweden: The Music of ABBA is the first performance in the five-week series that takes place at Cannonsburg Ski Area, 6800 Cannonsburg Rd. NE.

Arrival from Sweden also performs on Friday. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:45 p.m. for picnicking and pre-concert entertainment provided by jazz singer Kathy LaMar and keyboardist Bob VanStee.

Bob Bernhardt, principal pops conductor, will lead Arrival from Sweden through ABBA classics including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Gimme Gimme, and Take a Chance on Me.

Arrival from Sweden has a 22-year history of performing ABBA’s music around the world. The Grand Rapids Symphony said the group “embodies the personality and sound of the ABBA itself, right down to their authentic costumes.”
