A local dog trainer will host the first dog pageant in Grand Rapids to celebrate dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Adam “the Dog Trainer” Bonner, a local canine behaviorist, will host the inaugural West Michigan Dog Pageant at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at Richmond Park Pavilion, 963 Richmond St. NW in Grand Rapids.
The event will feature Miss Michigan 2022, Grand Rapids local Paige Rubleski, who will emcee and take pictures with attendees after the pageant.
The pageant will award medals to all dogs participating, following Bonner’s philosophy that “all dogs are magnificent.” The event is held to show the beauty of all dogs, no matter their breed, size or temperament, and will judge contestants on cuteness, attitude and behavior. There also will be a congeniality award decided by vote from the other contestants.
Sparta-based Pups Barkery will award a year’s supply of dog treats to the grand prize winner. The company also will give a treat to each contestant.
This event is open to sociable and fully vaccinated dogs of all shapes and sizes and will be held runway style, with a red carpet for dogs to walk during judging.
Attending dogs are welcome to walk the red carpet au naturel or dressed in anything they like and are expected to bring an owner with them. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and can bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating during the event.
Registration is open here through July 14 and is $25 per dog. This event is free for spectators.
Bonner offers training for dogs of all ages in group and individual classes. He uses positive reinforcement, classical and operant conditioning techniques to create training programs for dogs with a wide spectrum of behavioral issues, from obedience difficulties to aggression toward people and other dogs.
