Fishbeck, a leading engineering and consulting firm, is earning widespread recognition this year amid a remarkable period of growth. Today the Grand Rapids based firm announced that its team has been honored with an interior design award at the 2025 International Interior Design Association awards gala for its work on the Feeding America West Michigan volunteer and food distribution center in Kentwood.
“Our team is inspired by FAWM’s mission to fight hunger, and we set out to create an environment that is welcoming, functional, and representative of FAWM,” said Steve Romkema, Design Director at Fishbeck. “Winning the Award is a testament to our collaborative workshops and FAWM’s impact on our community.”
The award comes off the heels of another accolade. On April 25, it was announced that Fishbeck earned a spot on Engineering News-Record’s 2025 list of the Top 500 Design Firms in the U.S., coming in at No. 199 on the annual list that highlights the leading architecture and engineering firms based on revenue from the previous year. The ranking reflects Fishbeck’s generative performance in completing a range of projects across the Midwest.
In addition to receiving accolades, recent developments at the firm — including a strategic acquisition and key leadership promotions — reflect Fishbeck’s ongoing investment in its people, capabilities, and regional impact. In short, the Grand Rapids-based company continues to thrive in what some have deemed a difficult and uncertain economy, expanding its presence and expertise across the Midwest in recent months.
Strategic acquisitions expand capabilities and reach
In January of this year, Fishbeck merged with Align CEC, Inc., a civil engineering consulting firm based in Indiana with more than 60 years of experience in transportation design, water infrastructure, surveying, and construction inspection. The seamless collaboration is expected to open doors to new projects and further strengthen Fishbeck’s position as an industry leader across the region.

“Align’s focus on technical excellence and their strong client relationships make them an ideal partner for Fishbeck,” said Fishbeck Senior Vice President Tom Gray. “Their addition to our team strengthens our ability to take on complex projects and deliver outcomes that exceed expectations.”
Five months ago, Fishbeck acquired MDA Engineering, a well-established mechanical and electrical engineering firm based in Maumee, Ohio. The acquisition enhances Fishbeck’s service offerings and broadens its regional footprint by bringing in MDA’s specialized expertise and market experience.
“We are thrilled to welcome MDA Engineering to Fishbeck,” said Jeff Schumaker, Fishbeck’s president. “MDA’s experience and expertise in electrical and mechanical engineering are an excellent complement to our existing services. This acquisition reinforces our dedication to providing best-in-class solutions and strengthens our capability to meet the complex needs of our clients.”

MDA Engineering brought with them to Fishbeck a team of 27 professionals and a reputation for delivering innovative, reliable electrical and mechanical engineering solutions. The firm is known for its technical strength and commitment to sustainability— specializing in new building construction, renovations, energy retrofits, and industrial process support— serving sectors including government, education, healthcare, commercial, and industry.
“As we integrate MDA Engineering into our operations, we are confident their expertise will enhance our service offerings and provide additional value to our clients,” said Andrew Gill, Vice President/Director of Business Transformation. “Together, we will be able to deliver even more innovative and effective engineering solutions, driving success for our clients and fostering long-term partnerships.”
The acquisition aligns with Fishbeck’s broader mission to deliver comprehensive, forward-thinking solutions across the region, while continuing to invest in strong partnerships and community-focused work.
Leadership Promotions Signal Next Chapter of Growth
Fishbeck also recently promoted two long-time team members to the role of Senior Vice President, reinforcing its focus on leadership development and technical excellence.

On March 18, 2025, the firm announced that Bryan Turczynski, PE, and Ryan Musch, PE, LEED AP, SITES AP were stepping into elevated leadership roles. Both bring decades of combined experience and a track record of impactful project work and mentorship.
Based in Novi, Mich., Turczynski is a Senior Civil Engineer known for integrating emerging technologies such as AI, automation, and drone applications into civil engineering project delivery. He will play a central role in advancing Fishbeck’s operations across Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan, while continuing to mentor staff and cultivate a collaborative culture.

Musch, who is based in Grand Rapids, has been with the firm for nearly 20 years and has led major initiatives including the Western Michigan University Hilltop Village Road and Bridge and the Special Olympics Michigan Unified Sports & Inclusion Center. With an MBA complementing his engineering expertise, Musch is poised to lead growth in Fishbeck’s land development department and help shape the firm’s strategic direction. “Both Bryan and Ryan embody the innovative spirit and leadership that drive Fishbeck forward,” said Schumaker. “Their promotions not only recognize their individual achievements but also reinforce our commitment to empowering talented professionals who are dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities we serve.”
