Grand Rapids ranks as 68th-best biking city

The city of Grand Rapids ranked as the 68th-best biking city in the country overall in 2021, according to LawnStarter.

The website ranked 200 cities based on different factors, including the length of bike lanes, the share of workers who bike to work and access to bike stores and repair shops. Additionally, air quality, weather and availability of biking clubs in each city were considered.

Grand Rapids’ overall score was 45.63.

Grand Rapids was ranked 159th in biking access. The miles of bike lanes per square mile, number of bike trails, availability of bike-sharing program, bike rental facilities per 100,000 residents and bike shops per 100,000 residents in the city were considered in the ranking.

The city ranked 18th for the share of workers who bike to work, which was based on the share of workers who bike to work, bike clubs per 100,000 residents and bike tours per 100,000 residents.

Grand Rapids was ranked 47th in safety, measuring the city’s bike score, natural hazards index score, share of roads in poor conditions, bike-related fatalities per 100,000 residents and state biking laws ranking.

Finally, the second-largest city in Michigan ranked 151st in climate. The number of very cold days, number of very hot days, average monthly precipitation, average of sunshine and air quality were determining factors.

Methodology

LawnStarter averaged all of a city’s weighted scores across 18 metrics to determine its overall score out of 100 possible points.

LawnStarter received its data from AllTrails, Bikeshare.com, The League of American Bicyclists, National Center for Disaster Preparedness, National Centers for Environmental Information, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, TRIP, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USA Cycling, Walk Score and Yelp.
