Big Lake Brewing is set to release the second beer in its Exploratory Series this week.
Big Lake Brewing, based at 13 W. Seventh St. in downtown Holland, announced its Exploratory Series in December, and the cans in Volume No. 1 sold out in only one day when they released in January.
Volume No. 2, which will release on Feb. 23, has a base of Cryo Pop hops from Yakima Chief Hops. The hops are specially engineered and cryogenically frozen to produce a juicy “pop” of peach, pineapple and grapefruit flavor and aroma, while cutting down on any vegetal off-flavors, the brewery said. Idaho 7 and Pacific Gem hops also were used to bring in citrus and berry flavors, while Vienna Malt was used to give the beer complexity and depth.
The new brew in the series will be available on draft and in cans at the downtown Holland pub, as well as in limited distribution throughout the state.
“Big Lake’s Exploratory Series blurs the lines between art and science by experimenting with aspects of brewing including alcohol level, mouthfeel and carbonation and using unique flavors and ingredients including cryogenically frozen hops, rare grains and hard-to-find yeasts,” the brewery said.
The distinctive ingredients and processes used means these only will ever be small-batch, limited-edition brews, Big Lake said.
