A classic film about baseball will screen this weekend at Sullivan (aka Valley) Field, 650 Valley Ave. NW.
Fans of Valley Field, an organization with a mission to restore the park to its former grandeur by making it a premier community gathering space, and The Grand Rapids Film Society have joined forces to present a free screening of “The Sandlot” Saturday, Aug. 19.
Directed by David Mickey Evans, “The Sandlot” tells the story of Scottie Smalls, who moves to a new neighborhood and makes friends with a group of kids who play baseball at the local sandlot. Together, they go on a series of adventures in this coming-of-age tale. The film – celebrating its 30th anniversary this year – is rated PG and has a runtime of 101 minutes.
“All are invited to join us for a memorable summer night at Sullivan Field experiencing the magic of ‘The Sandlot’ on the big screen,” Wealthy Theatre Director Chris Kotcher said. “We are grateful for our sponsors and Fans of Valley Field for bringing this affordable, all-ages event to our community.”
In the event of inclement weather, the screening venue will be at Wealthy Theatre, 1130 Wealthy St. SE.
There will be hot dogs and beverages for sale and yard games available to enjoy. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs for seating on the lawn.
While free to attend, space is limited. Those interested in joining are asked to reserve a spot online. The gates will open at 6 p.m. and the film begins at sundown.
Chairs, blankets and canopies are allowed, but please be courteous of fellow attendees. Outside alcohol is not permitted per state law. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
Attendees can drop their chairs and other items at the entryway and find street parking, avoiding blocking residential driveways.
