The Holland Museum will showcase a new exhibit, Mathias Alten: Beyond the Oil Paintings, beginning Friday and running through July 25.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Alten’s birth, the exhibit will feature some of his watercolor and sketch pieces from the GVSU Art Gallery Collection and also will show the timeline of his life, from his birth in Germany to his passing in 1938.

The Holland Museum will be the only venue hosting the images this year.

“We are thrilled to partner with GVSU Art Gallery to host this birthday celebration,” Holland Museum Executive Director Ricki Levine said. “The watercolors and sketches highlight a transformative artist, rooted in West Michigan.”

Alten’s work was displayed at the museum in 2019 after art pieces were donated by Anita M. Gilleo.

Upcoming public virtual programs include:

  • 7 p.m. April 29 — Inside the Artist’s Mind: Mathias Alten’s Drawings with Michigan artist and teacher Royce Deans.
  • 7 p.m. May 13 — The Artistic Practice: Exploring Mathias J. Alten’s Medium of Choice with Joel Zwart, curator of exhibitions at Grand Valley State University Art Gallery.
