A casual restaurant and bar that serves “coastal sea and land fare” is settling into downtown Grand Rapids after a long road to opening.

Owner Cindy Schneider last month held a grand opening for her and her family’s new restaurant, Beacon Corner Bar at 38 W. Fulton St., according to a Facebook post.

Cindy Schneider is president of Beacon, Dan Schneider is director, and Jacob Johnson is executive chef.

The restaurant had been in the works since 2019 but construction was delayed by the pandemic. The project restarted in 2021 and was completed in late fall and open to the public by Dec. 31.

“Beacon Corner Bar encountered so many hurdles that were out of our control,” Cindy Schneider said. “We were either too late or too early for governmental support during COVID and deeply in debt with a lot of equipment but no one to install it. Steering toward its completion made our heads spin. Completing this project gave this family an amazing sense of accomplishment with our perseverance for the project. We are very proud to own three successful and exciting restaurants in downtown Grand Rapids with amazing staff members.”

Cindy Schneider, Dan Schneider and their son, Nolyn Schneider, also are president, vice president and regional manager, respectively, of ROAM by San Chez, and the family has owned and operated San Chez Bistro, which is in the same building as Beacon, since 1992. All three properties are part of San Chez Restaurant Group.

Beacon Corner Bar serves coastal fare such as seafood boils, lobster rolls, fish and chips, oysters on the half shell, clam chowder and coconut shrimp, as well as “land fare” such as burgers and sandwiches, salads and a chicken tender basket. Drinks include “vintage-inspired” cocktails, mocktails, draft beer, wine and a variety of sodas and teas.

The restaurant’s website says Beacon Corner Bar is “inspired by (Cindy Schneider’s) memories of growing up in a clamming and fishing community off Long Island, New York.”

The restaurant is open 3-9 p.m. Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday and 3-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
