Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids, a salon franchise focused on an entertaining and comfortable haircut experience for kids, will open its first West Michigan location this weekend.
The new salon at 2359 Health Drive SW in Wyoming will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22.
Each haircut includes a wash, cut, blow-dry, style and a “minicure.” The 1,200 square-foot salon offers cuts for children of all ages, as well as parents, and two stylists will specialize in haircuts for kids with special needs.
Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids will give a percentage of payment for each service to a West Michigan nonprofit, and kids will have the opportunity to choose between Kids’ Food Basket, HUGS Ranch or Artists Creating Together for their donation.
The salon also offers character salon chairs, including a fire truck, police car, airplane and a “Frozen” jeep, in addition to gaming chairs for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Lollipops, balloons and temporary tattoos also are available to make the experience more enjoyable for kids.
The Grand Rapids salon employs five individuals and is looking to hire more.
The idea for the Wyoming location came from a conversation during the pandemic between friends and neighbors Emily and Jeff Tornblom and Tara and Mitch Starback. The friends realized they did not have a local, fun solution to take their kids to get a haircut and established Starblom LLC, as the salon’s combined operating entity.
Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids has two additional Michigan salons in Ann Arbor and Livonia and operates franchises throughout the U.S., as well as in Canada and Israel.
Hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
Appointments can be made online and more information is at Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids – Grand Rapids Facebook page.
