Downtown Kalamazoo will be getting a “skele-fun” makeover for the third annual Metro Toyota SkeleTour taking place through October.
Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership announced more than 60 life-size skeletons representing local businesses and organizations will be on display, enabling visitors to take and submit “skelfies” for chances at weekly “Downtown Dollars” prizes.
Skeletons will be on display along Michigan Avenue, the Kalamazoo Mall, Rose Street and Portage Street with special displays found on the North Kalamazoo Mall near the Radisson Plaza Hotel.
Guests must tag @downtownkalamazoo and use the #skelfiekzoo hashtag with their photo(s) on Instagram to enter. Multiple photo submissions grant guests additional chances to win.
Other event features encourage support of local bars and restaurants with the SkeleTour Bar Crawl Passport, sponsored by Discover Kalamazoo. The digital passport offers additional opportunities to win “downtown dollars” simply by enjoying your favorite “brews and boos” with skeleton-themed drink specials at participating bars and restaurants. Guests also can enjoy their drinks within the Central Commons Refreshment area while perusing the skeletons on display.
Begonia Brothers Landscape offered its creative expertise to enable the multiple event displays.
For guests able to attend just one day of the SkeleTour, Saturday, Oct. 9 offers multiple events including pumpkin carving demonstrations by John Angevine from 12-4 p.m., appearances by special costumed characters on the Kalamazoo Mall from 12-3 p.m., and a live performance by The Skeletones from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Bates Alley.
Guests attending on Oct. 9 also can enjoy the added bonus of shopping at two outdoor markets by Vintage in the Zoo on the North Kalamazoo Mall, marking the final Shop Second Saturday event of the season. Many local shops also will be hosting Shop Second Saturday deals to encourage additional support of local businesses.
