GR|Mag’s Top Weekend Picks

You’ve survived back-to-school week, now get out and celebrate. There is plenty to do in Grand Rapids this weekend.

Eastown Streetfair

The Eastown Community Association and Eastown Business Association are hosting the 44th annual Eastown Streetfair, one of the most popular festivals in Grand Rapids and a staple in the Eastown community.

This free, family-friendly event celebrates art, local businesses, food, music, and the Eastown neighborhood. Streetfair runs along Wealthy Street between Lake Drive and Giddings Ave., and will feature nearly 150 vendors, a variety of food trucks and live music.

There will be musical performances throughout the day on three stages. The main stage is located on Wealthy between Atlas and Giddings, with additional acts at Billy’s Lounge and Mulligan’s Pub.

Streetfair takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Downtown GR Bike Party

Enjoy a leisurely bike ride through Grand Rapids’ West Side with a group of cool ladies. She Rides Her Own Way has teamed up with and Long Road Distillers for Downtown GR Bike Party.

The free ride kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Rosa Parks Circle. The route will take riders across the Blue Bridge and through the West Side, concluding at Long Road where there will be a special concert.

Movie in Heartside Park

Movies in the Park moves from Ah-Nab-Awen Park to Heartside Park this weekend. You can catch screenings of “Selena” (7 p.m.) and “The Bodyguard” (9:30 p.m.) on Friday night. The event is free to attend.

Pre-movie entertainment starts at 6 p.m. and is hosted by Gabriella de la Vega of El Mundo Musical. DJ SuperDre is also spinning. Dress up like Selena and enter the Selena look-a-like contest, the winner of which will receive a Selena by MAC makeup prize package.

*The movies will be played in English with Spanish subtitles for the Spanish speaking community.

“Princess Story” at Dog Story Theater
(through Sunday)

It’s your last chance to catch “Princess Story,” an original musical written by a local co-writers & producers Ian Mockerman & Julia Yob, of M.Y. Musical World. The production premiered on Sept. 1 at Dog Story Theater and runs through this weekend.

“Not all who wander are lost!” So claims Princess Maggie, a pop-culture-loving princess who accidentally rescues herself. By the time Prince Sebastian shows up to save her, Maggie’s decided she’s quite happy with her current adventurous life, thank-you-very-much! But when their bickering results in the duo stumbling into a kingdoms-wide plot, the two quickly realize that they will have to work together to save the day.

Visit Dog Story Theater for showtimes and ticket information. Tickets cost $12-15.
