A local maker of Big Joe brand beanbag chairs is turning Rosa Parks Circle into a napper’s paradise next week.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, Comfort Research will make 100 beanbag chairs available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for napping.

Napportunity, as the event is being dubbed, isn’t just about giving downtown workers and visitors the opportunity to get some extra rest on their lunch hour. Comfort Research plans to donate $10 for every person who “takes a nap” during the event to nonprofit i Understand, with the ultimate goal of raising $10,000 for the charity.

i Understand is a local nonprofit organization founded by Yvonnie Woodrick to support those who have lost loved ones by suicide or mental illness. The money raised during the Napportunity event, will be used to support educational events, speaking engagements and care packages.

Chip George, ambassador of awesome (aka co-founder) at Comfort Research, said September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness month, making it a particularly opportune time to partner with i Understand.

“i Understand is a great charity, and somewhat newer, and we wanted to support them during a month that’s critical for them,” George said.

Use of the Big Joe beanbags is free throughout the two-hour event and George encourages people to take a break from their day to help out a good cause. “All you have to do is show up. You simply stop by Rosa Parks Circle, plop down on one of the 100 Big Joe chairs, and you will be counted as a participant.”

Take a nap at Rosa Parks Circle on Wednesday & $10 will be donated to charity.

He added, “People can nap for as little as 10 minutes.”

To encourage community participation, free “nappetizers” (nap + appetizers) as well as other promotional giveaways will be available from program partners including: Ferris Coffee Co., Denali Moose Tracks and Meijer.

“We’ll even have the world’s quietest DJ onsite, mixing waves and synths,” George said.

Comfort Research also said several local celebrities have agreed to participate in Napportunity. Visit Napportunity for more information.
