Summer is wedding season in West Michigan and Makeup BLVD saw its share of brides and bridesmaids this year.
While helping them get glammed up for the big day, Melina Tobin, owner of Makeup BLVD, at 1059 Wealthy St. SE, said she kept hearing the same request. “Our brides suggested a one-stop shop for wedding services.”
The addition of a salon was actually part of Tobin’s three-year vision for the space, so she thought why not expand into salon services early. Makeup BLVD opened in December 2017.
“When we planned the store layout back in 2017, I had the salon in the back of my mind. So we did minimal reconfiguration. We had to have some plumbing and electrical work done and also added in a full back bar where we mix and store colors,” Tobin said.
With three additional chairs for salon services in place, Makeup BLVD is now offering haircuts, color, hair treatments, styles, and up-dos, withplans to add in extensions and Brazilian blowouts in the new year.
Tobin also added three hair product lines. “We carry Pureology, Verb and Redken hair products.” She is also phasing out a cosmetic brand that will be replaced with another natural makeup line in 2019.
Tobin is hoping more retail stores will begin to line the Wealthy Corridor. “I don’t think a lot of people come to this side of the neighborhood to go shopping but I have faith for the future, and we are excited to see new businesses come to this area.”
Looking to the horizon, Tobin said she wants to give back to the community and she is considering how to offer free hair and makeup makeovers to people who have recently “lost a job and need a pick me up or on the way to an interview.”
