A local performance venue is heating up winter with a four-monthlong jazz series and festival.
St. Cecilia Music Center (SCMC) will host a jazz series and festival between January and April at its location, 24 Ransom Ave. NE in Grand Rapids.
The jazz series will feature performances by Joshua Redman, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Bill Charlap, and Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
Redman will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20. He is a Grammy-nominated artist and jazz saxophonist who has released over 20 albums and performed with artists such as Stevie Wonder, DJ Logic, The Rolling Stones, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and The Roots.
Bridgewater and Charlap will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10. Bridgewater is a three-time Grammy award-winning and Tony award-winning artist. Her most recent album is “Memphis…Yes, I’m Ready.”
Charlap is a Grammy award-winning pianist and has performed with Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand.
Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra will grace the stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14. Marsalis is a trombonist, composer and producer and has performed with Art Blakey, Max Roach and Elvin Jones, Fats Domino, Ray Charles and George Clinton.
SCMC also launching its first WinterFest jazz festival featuring the following performances: Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer, Christian McBride Trio and Cyrille Aimee, and Christian McBride and Inside Straight.
McBride and Meyer will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24. McBride is a seven-time Grammy award-winning jazz bassist player. He hosts and produces “The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian” on SiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s “Jazz Night in America,” a weekly radio show and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at the Lincoln Center.
Meyer is a Grammy award-winning performer and composer who joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile and fiddler Stuart Duncan for the Sony Masterworks recording “The Goat Rodeo Sessions.”
McBride Trio and Aimee will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25. Aimee is a Grammy-nominated vocalist and actress. Her most recent album is called “Move on: A Sondheim.”
McBride and Inside Straight is performing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. Inside Straight is an acoustic quintet formed by McBride. The group’s albums include “Kind of Brown” and “People Music.”
