Runners and walkers will take to an airport runway next month as part of a unique race event.
The Gerald R. Ford International Airport is set to host its annual Runway 5K and 1 mile fun run Saturday, Sept. 24.
Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m., with the 5K race starting at 9 a.m. The 1 mile fun run will begin at 9:05 a.m.
The course will begin north of the economy parking lot, looping onto taxiway Juliet and runway 8L/26R, the airport’s general aviation runway, before ending back at the parking lot.
Awards for the top three overall males, females and individual age groups will be presented at 10:15 a.m.
“We are delighted to host this community-favorite event,” said Tory Richardson, president and CEO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority. “This race gives runners and walkers a unique experience, as the course is typically reserved for aircraft only.”
The Ford International Airport’s two commercial aviation runways will be operational during the race.
Each year, the Runway 5K partners with a local nonprofit supporting the greater West Michigan community. This year’s charity partner is Kids’ Food Basket.
“As an organization that values connections, this is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to support Kids’ Food Basket, which fills a critical need for children across West Michigan,” Richardson said.
Registration for the 5K begins at $44 and $30 for the 1 mile fun run. Registration includes a T-shirt, finisher medals for those who complete the 5K or fun run, post-race snacks and beverages, awards for top finishers and free finisher’s photos.
Early packet pickup and registration will take place 4-7 p.m. Sept. 23 at The Runnery, 5361 Alpine Ave. NW in Comstock Park.
The race is organized by Trivium Racing and the Ford International Airport Authority.
