A community theater launched a new education initiative.
Grand Rapids Civic Theatre Wednesday, June 8, announced its new Young Artist Studio program, a 10-month intensive training for children in grades seven through 12 who are considering a career in theater performance arts.
The program will be the first of its kind in West Michigan.
Students in the Young Artist Studio program will be provided individual mentors, advanced classes curated to the needs of students, master classes with industry professionals, and performance and leadership opportunities with the Civic Theater.
“We are so thrilled to be bringing this innovative program to our West Michigan community,” said Allyson Paris, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre’s artistic director. “There are very few formal training opportunities for young people in our area who are interested in a career in the theater arts. The studio program will help to fill that void – and will open a new world of possibilities to students who are considering theater as a career.”
The Civic Theatre is encouraging all interested students to apply, regardless of economic status, and will offer need-based scholarships by application.
“Civic firmly believes that anyone should have the opportunity to pursue a career in our industry,” Paris said. “Socioeconomic barriers shouldn’t prevent students with a passion for the theater arts from pursuing a career in the field.”
Auditions for the 2022/2023 Young Artist Studio program will be held mid-July, and the program is set to begin in September. Interested students can find more audition information here.
