Ryan Burdick was sworn in last week to the East Grand Rapids City Commission, filling the vacant first ward seat.

Burdick was unanimously appointed by city commissioners during their Feb. 20 meeting. The seat was vacated by former commissioner Kris Pachla following his election to the Kent County Board of Commissioners in November.

“I am honored to serve on the East Grand Rapids City Commission and to work alongside respected leaders who focus on community wellbeing at every step of their decision-making process,” Burdick said. “I look forward to listening to resident concerns and connecting individuals to the right resources.”

An East Grand Rapids resident of five years, Burdick has served on the East Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Commission since 2021. He previously served as a professional pilot, flying domestic and international trips and is currently a stay-at-home dad.

During Burdick’s appointment process, city commissioners noted his experience with local government and established relationships with first ward residents made him an ideal candidate for the position.

Burdick holds a bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan University. He and his wife, Stephanie, have two children: Walter, 10, and George, 7.
