Symphony to host Bach festival

The Grand Rapids Symphony will honor composer Johann Sebastian Bach with the return of the Grand Rapids Bach Festival.

The symphony will begin the festival with “Bach in Sacred Spaces” by performing at places of worship throughout the city.

Bach’s “Mass in B Minor” will be performed by Key’mon Murrah, countertenor; Luthien Brackett, mezzo; Zach Finkelstein, tenor; Jesse Blumberg, baritone; Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus; Pearl Shangkuan, director; Ken-David Masur, conductor and Sonya Headlam, soprano.

The festival also will feature the final round of the Linn Maxwell Keller Distinguished Bach Musician Award competition, which supports young singers who are pursuing a career in music with a $10,000 prize.

  • Sundays, March 27-April 10: Bach in Sacred Spaces
  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19: Goldberg Conversations: 13 Ways of Looking at the Goldberg: Bach Reimagined with guest artist Laura Downes, at Saint Cecilia Music Center, at 24 Ransom Ave. NE
  • 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21: Linn Maxwell Keller Distinguished Bach Musician Award finals at First United Methodist Church, at 2227 Fulton St. SE
  • 4 p.m. Sunday, April 24: Bach IV: Mass in B Minor, BWV 232, at DeVos Performance Hall at 303 Monroe Ave. NW
