Musicians to put on ‘Jazz Party’

St. Cecilia Music Center will host a jazz concert in Grand Rapids.

Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Royce Auditorium, at 24 Ransom Ave. NE in downtown Grand Rapids.

Marsalis is a trombonist, composer, producer and the brother of jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. He has produced over 120 recordings, which have won several nominations, including a Grammy Award. He has toured internationally with jazz musicians such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones and Slide Hampton.

Marsalis formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra in 2008, and it features up to 18 musicians.

Songs that will be performed include “Go to the Mardi Gras,” “Jazz Party,” “Jackson County Jubilee,” “7th Ward Boogaloo” and “Snowball.”

“We are looking forward to a great night of jazz and a lively performance by Delfeayo Marsalis and New Orleans’ dynamic Uptown Jazz Orchestra,” said Cathy Holbrook, St. Cecilia Music Center executive director. “Delfeayo and the great musicians in the Uptown Jazz Orchestra will thrill the audience with their big band sound and wonderful stage presence. We look forward to everyone experiencing this exuberant concert and Delfeayo Marsalis up close and live at SCMC on April 14.”
