The third annual Labor Day High School Basketball Tournament will be held on Monday, Sept. 6 between 3-7:30 p.m. at Dickinson Park, 1635 Willard Ave. SE in Grand Rapids.

The tournament is being held by Elevated Principals and All-In Sports, a sports training company in Grand Rapids. It will include almost 40 high school players, including four team captains, their respective high school teammates from Grand Rapids and volunteer coaches.

The basketball competition was organized by former Dickinson Elementary school graduates Dominic Shannon and Landon Mitchner. Shannon is the All-In Sports program director and a development coach, and Mitchner is an All-In Sports development coach.

“As the city continues to experience an uptick in violence, we believe that creating spaces like this for youth is very important for community building,” Shannon said. “In the past, we’ve had a ton of neighborhood youth that attend Dickinson Elementary attend the tournament. This gives them an opportunity to watch their older brothers and neighbors compete while providing a safe place for fun, fellowship and friendly competition at that location. We also look forward to expanding our program in the future to include girls and young women.”

The event is free to the public and the players who participate.
