St. Cecilia Music Center will feature the musical stylings of critically acclaimed jazz and world music performer Luciana Souza next month.
Souza will perform at the music center, at 24 Ransom Ave. NE in downtown Grand Rapids, at 7:30 p.m. March 5.
A recording artist since 2002, Souza has released six Grammy-nominated albums: Brazilian Duos, North and South, Duos II, Tide, Duos III and The Book of Chet.
Her debut record for Universal, The New Bossa Nova, was produced by her husband, Larry Klein, and also received critical recognition.
For the St. Cecilia show, she will bring her program called “The Book of Longing,” performing alongside Chico Pinheiro and Scott Colley, for a night of “sultry Brazilian jazz.”
Beginning her career at age 3 with a radio commercial, Souza recorded more than 200 jingles and soundtracks, becoming a first-call studio veteran at age 16.
From 2005 to 2010, she was the jazz artist in residence with the prestigious San Francisco Performances.
In 2005 and 2013, Souza was awarded Best Female Jazz Singer by the Jazz Journalists Association.
“We are thrilled to have the multi-talented Luciana Souza on stage at St. Cecilia Music Center,” said Cathy Holbrook, executive director at St. Cecilia.
“To quote Billboard Magazine, ‘Her music soulfully reflects, wistfully regrets, romantically woos (and) joyfully celebrates.’ All of us are looking forward to hearing her amazing voice.”
Tickets, $40-$45, are available online at scmc-online.org, by calling St. Cecilia at (616) 459-2224 or visiting the theater box office, at 24 Ransom Ave. NE.
Those interested in attending a 6:30 p.m. pre-concert reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres for $15 should reserve a spot by Friday, Feb. 28.
A post-concert party with dessert, coffee and wine is open to all concertgoers to meet the artists, obtain autographs and purchase music.
