Studio C announced it has made the decision to permanently close Celebration Cinema Woodland.

According to a statement from the company, the decision to close had been considered for a while, but the ongoing COVID-19 crisis accelerated the closing timeline. The cinema’s lease was set to expire later this year, and it will not be renewed.

“Surrounded by several other high-performing theatres, Celebration Woodland has an expensive lease and has operated at a loss for most of its history,” the company said. “Further, the theatre’s unique second run (delayed release) business model has been declining and is no longer viable.”

Celebration Woodland’s independent film series will be moving to Celebration North and Celebration Studio Park.

“We remain committed to programming the best of independent film strategically throughout our circuit,” the company said.

Studio C also has introduced low-cost, movie-going options featuring new movies at all of its Grand Rapids-area Celebration Cinema theatres. This may have led to the decline in attendance at Celebration Woodland, according to the company.

Low-cost programs at all Celebration Cinemas include:

  • Sunday Night Movie: featuring $6 tickets for a new release
  • T.A.C.O. (Tickets Are Cheap On) Tuesday: featuring $6 tickets all day for most movies
  • Flick’s Family Film Festival: free movies for kids 12 and under during the spring and fall
