There’s something about autumn in Grand Rapids: the crispness in the air, the changing leaves, the first excuse to reach for a cozy sweater—and, at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, thousands upon thousands of chrysanthemums putting on a spectacular seasonal show.
Returning Oct. 1–31, Mums at Meijer Gardens transforms the gardens into a celebration of fall, with Michigan’s largest display of chrysanthemums blooming in rich autumn shades throughout the campus. From the Grand Entry Garden to the Victorian Garden Parlor and Seasonal Display Garden, colorful mums mingle with ornamental grasses, pumpkins, gourds and other seasonal plantings for a landscape that feels unmistakably like fall in Michigan.
Inside, botanical displays add another layer to the experience, with fresh and dried arrangements inspired by the harvest season.
“Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year to experience Meijer Gardens,” says Wendy Overbeck Dunham, director of horticulture at Meijer Gardens. “From thousands of chrysanthemums in peak bloom to harvest-inspired activities and seasonal experiences across our campus, guests can enjoy the beauty of the season in a variety of ways while spending time together outdoors.”
And there’s plenty more to discover this year. Building on the former Autumn Nights programming, Autumn Weekends expands the fall experience throughout October with live music, seasonal food and beverages, family-friendly activities and opportunities to simply linger and enjoy the gardens.
Think lawn games, harvest activities, pumpkins and gourds, family Halloween fun and live music on weekend afternoons. On Oct. 24 and 31, Hallowee-Ones brings a playful, not-too-spooky celebration for families, including a parade and seasonal activities.
Whether you come for the mums, the music, the pumpkins—or just an excuse to spend a beautiful fall afternoon outside—Meijer Gardens offers plenty of ways to savor the season.
