Chow Hound Pet Supplies is inviting pet parents to bring in extra boxes from out-of-town pet suppliers as part of a new program to benefit local rescue animals as they wait for their forever home.

Throughout January, pet owners are encouraged to bring in cardboard boxes from Chewy, Amazon, or other pet delivery companies to their local Chow Hound to be shredded at no cost as part of the company’s “Shredding for a Good Cause” campaign. The Grand Rapids-based pet supply company will donate its national competitor box shredding to Harbor Humane Society to be used as bedding materials for pets waiting to be adopted.

“To strengthen our local communities, we are highlighting ways to support local rescue and adoption and local businesses as well,” said Brannon Dixon, CEO, Chow Hound Pet Supplies. “Chow Hound can provide the same products that the online competitors do in half the time – without the abundance of cardboard – from a neighborhood business. With us, you can still get all the convenience of online shopping, but also support a local business with pet experts in-store who can assist with questions or concerns.”

Cardboard shavings provide a healthy, dust-free and non-toxic bedding for pets. The shreddings also are odor-absorbent and provide an eco-conscious lining for animals.

According to Chow Hound, an estimated 850 million tons of cardboard is thrown away in the U.S. annually, equating to roughly 1.4 million trees. Cardboard ending up in landfills produces methane and carbon dioxide, greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

“Chow Hound Pet Supplies has been an incredible partner to Harbor Humane over the years, and we are so thrilled to be partnering together on this campaign,” said Jen Self-Aulgur, executive director, Harbor Humane Society. “We strongly believe in the three R’s of recycling, reducing and reusing. We applaud Chow Hound for this effort, and our small animals look forward to taking full advantage of the recycled bedding.”

Chow Hound offers same-day local delivery and free in-store pickup of nearly 8,000 items including pet food, supplies, toys and treats. Customers may also set up AutoOrder for recurring delivery of pet essentials they need on a regular basis.
