A young, newly married couple purchased One Stop Coney Shop from its previous husband-and-wife owners and are operating it as a takeout joint.

Conor Malloy and Olivia Malloy in late August began the process of buying the quick-service eatery One Stop Coney Shop at 154 E. Fulton St. in downtown Grand Rapids from its founders, Leslie DeGalan and Brian DeGalan. Conor Malloy was a former employee at the restaurant.

The DeGalans opened One Stop Coney Shop in 2009 after moving to Grand Rapids from Grosse Pointe, according to an October 2009 article by Rapid Growth Media. They announced their retirement and sale of the restaurant in a Sept. 28 Facebook post.

The Malloy couple said they began talks to buy the place the same week as their Aug. 22 wedding, and they officially reopened it as the new owners on Oct. 12.

“The opportunity presented itself, and we knew it was something we couldn’t pass up,” the pair said. “We love nothing more than to make food for our friends and community. We both come from the service industry, and owning a restaurant is something we both have always dreamed of but never knew it would happen, let alone the same week (as) our wedding.”

After a two-week soft opening period that included takeout and dine-in service, the couple determined that due to COVID-19, it would be best to run the place as takeout only at this time.

Before reopening, the Malloys repainted, added a few personal touches to the eatery and made some changes to the menu, although they noted it will retain the restaurant’s original favorites.

“One of our most popular new additions to the menu is a Kimchi Ripped Dog,” the couple said. “The kimchi dog is a bacon-wrapped, deep-fried hot dog covered in kimchi, spicy mayo and scallions.”

The Malloys said they currently are working on more menu items and will share updates, as well as any new specials, shortly.

They also plan to add online ordering soon.

One Stop Coney Shop is open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
