Leon & Son wine bottles Grand Rapids

A husband-and-wife team has opened a wine shop in Grand Rapids.

Leon & Son opened last month in the East Hills neighborhood, at 972 Cherry St. SE.

It is the second location for the company, with the original shop being in Brooklyn, New York.

The 1,000-square-foot shop is owned by Chris Leon and Cristina Leon, who’s from Grand Rapids.

The shop focuses on “restaurant-style” hospitality, helping shoppers navigate the complex field of new and old-world wines from all across Europe and the Americas.

“If you’re looking at shelves and nobody’s there to walk you through or shine light on things, then it’s not a very fun experience, and we try to kind of take all that fear away,” Chris Leon said.

Chris Leon holds an advanced-level certification through the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

Leon & Son’s New York location has received critical acclaim from GQ magazine, Brooklyn magazine and New York magazine, among other publications, and won three gold medals from Wine-Searcher for its Burgundy, Californian and European lists.
