Founders Brewing Co. is releasing a new beer just in time for ArtPrize 2017. The Grand Rapids brewery said today it has partnered with ArtPrize for the fifth year on a special release.

This year’s ArtPrize beer is Green Zebra, a gose-style ale brewed with watermelon and sea salt.

Green Zebra is described as “subtly sour and a little sweet.” Founders said the ale is a “refreshing take” on a nearly extinct German style, gose, a top-fermented beer that originated in Goslar, Germany.

Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly hopped beer and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouth feel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

“We love playing with expectations when it comes to brewing our ArtPrize beers and Green Zebra is the perfect example of that,” said Dave Engbers, Founders co-founder and president. “The gose style is very unique and pretty unknown, even amongst craft beer drinkers, and we wanted to bring our version of it to a larger audience.”

Previous ArtPrize beers include Mosaic Promise, Pale Joe and Spectra Trifecta.

Green Zebra will be available at Founders in the taproom beginning on Aug. 15 and on store shelves in mid-August. Founders will release Green Zebra in six-pack cans. It will be available in all 46 states where Founders beer is distributed. Green Zebra comes in at 4.6% ABV and 10 IBUs.

Jacob Wiseheart, Founders employee, created the Green Zebra label.
