The City of Kentwood is looking for its very own Clark Griswold, the beloved and eccentric character from the holiday classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, inviting residents to participate in its annual Holiday Light Display Contest.

Through Dec. 12, Kentwood residents and those within the Kentwood Public Schools district can enter by submitting a photo of their festive outdoor displays online.

The submitted photos will be shared on the city’s social media pages, where the public can vote for their favorite displays from Dec. 13-18. The top three vote-getters will earn bragging rights and a year’s worth of festive fame.

“We’re looking forward to hosting the Holiday Light Display Contest again and seeing the creative and colorful displays residents create this year,” said Kentwood Parks and Recreation Director Val Romeo. “This friendly competition offers an opportunity for loved ones to work together and create a festive light display, bringing holiday cheer to their neighbors and other residents.”

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, a 1989 holiday comedy, features Clark Griswold as a well-meaning but often overzealous father determined to create the ultimate Christmas celebration — including a wildly extravagant holiday light display. Watch it on Max in 2024, where it’s streaming or buy the movie on: Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV, YouTube movies, or at Redbox’s digital rental service.

Winners will be announced online on Thursday, Dec. 19.
