Grand Rapids Symphony performs music of Rachmaninoff

Featured in the finale of the film, “Shine,” Rachmaninoff’s towering Third Piano Concerto is known as the yardstick by which pianists are measured. Rachmaninoff later recalled it by saying “If I had any plan in composing this theme, I was thinking only of sound. I wanted to ‘sing’ the melody on the piano…”.

The concerts take place Feb. 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. inside DeVos Performance Hall, 300 Ottawa NW, Suite 100 and feature Marcelo Lehninger  as conductor and Sergei Babayan on piano. Purchase tickets here.

Before the show, Grand Rapids Symphony Vice President of Marketing & Communications Carlos Vicente leads a free pre-concert conversation, “Inside the Music,” giving concert goers insight into the evening’s program. This is available to ticket holders and takes place at 7 p.m. in the auditorium prior to the performance.
