With snow on the ground, Grand Rapids parks are gearing up to offer winter activities at public spaces throughout the city.

Free sled rentals and winter clothing rentals will be available, weather permitting, from 1-4 p.m. every Saturday at Mulick Park, at 1632 Sylvan Ave. SE and Plaster Creek Park, at 2401 Buchanan Ave. SW.

Additional pop-up sledding events at other hills across the Grand Rapids park system will be announced as weather allows on the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Facebook and Instagram pages. Sled rental programs are provided by the city’s Thrive Outside initiative, which aims to create equitable, meaningful outdoor experiences for young people and families in the city.

Indian Trails Golf Course will offer winter weather activities and is open daily from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. for fat tire biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing on its trail system, as weather permits. The park is located at 2776 Kalamazoo Ave. SE. The clubhouse will be open and staffed for snowshoe rentals and concessions from 3-8 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12-4 p.m. Sunday.

Indian Trails’ winter trail system features a 3.7-mile fat tire bike loop and a 2-mile cross-country ski and snowshoe loop. Use of the trail system for the day includes a $3 fee, and season passes are available for $15. Snowshoes will be available to rent when the clubhouse is open and are included in the admission fee. Visitors looking to bike and ski must bring their own equipment.

“Activating our parks and public spaces in the winter months is one of our key priorities,” said David Marquardt, Parks and Recreation director. “The activities at Indian Trails Golf Course have grown in popularity over the years, and we’re excited to see the property get continued use in all seasons.”

Day and seasonal passes can be purchased online, and more information on Thrive Outside Grand Rapids is on the city’s website.
