‘Chamber’ returns for season finale

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presents evening of classical masterworks, highlighted by Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence”

St. Cecilia Music Center The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will return to St. Cecilia Music Center on Thursday, April 24, to close out the 2024–25 Chamber Music Series with a program steeped in classical elegance and virtuosity.

Headlining the evening is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, a vibrant and emotionally rich string sextet that serves as the centerpiece of the concert. The performance will take place in the acoustically stunning Royce Auditorium, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The concert features an ensemble of world-renowned musicians, including CMS Co-Artistic Director and cellist David Finckel. He will be joined on stage by Sihao He (cello), Paul Huang (violin), Danbi Um (violin), Matthew Lipman (viola), and Timothy Ridout (viola). Together, they will interpret a diverse program ranging from the structured brilliance of Bach to the romantic sweep of Strauss.

The evening’s repertoire includes:

  • J.S. Bach: Ricercar a 6 from The Musical Offering, BWV 1079

  • Joseph Haydn: Trio in G major for violin, viola, and cello, Hob. XV:40

  • Franz Schubert: Trio in B-flat major, D. 581

  • Richard Strauss: Sextet for Strings from Capriccio, Op. 85

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Sextet in D minor, Op. 70, Souvenir de Florence

“This concert is a fitting finale to our season,” said Cathy Holbrook, St. Cecilia’s executive and artistic director. “It brings together six exceptional artists to perform music by some of history’s most revered composers. Hosting CMS in Royce Auditorium is always an extraordinary experience for our audience.”

Tickets are priced at $55, $40, and $25, with an additional $4 ticketing fee. They are available online at scmcgr.org or through the box office at 616-459-2224.

Jazz icon Christian McBride also takes the stage

Just two nights earlier, on Tuesday, April 22, acclaimed bassist Christian McBride returns to Grand Rapids as part of the SCMC Spectacular Jazz Series. The eight-time GRAMMY Award winner brings his new band, Ursa Major, to the stage for a night of genre-defying jazz fusion. Known for his dynamic stage presence and technical brilliance, McBride continues to push boundaries while honoring jazz tradition.

Tickets for the McBride performance range from $70 to $40 and can be purchased through SCMC’s website or box office. The concert also begins at 7:30 p.m.
