Organizations and businesses are welcoming the holidays with an inaugural Christmas tree lighting event.

The Boston Square Community Christmas Tree Lighting event will begin at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 4, at Boston Square Community Parklet, 1505 Kalamazoo Ave. SE in Grand Rapids.

The free event will include photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus from 4:30-6 p.m., holiday music, nativity performance by New Dimensions Victory Center, stocking giveaways and outdoor games.

The ceremonial start of the holiday will begin at 6 p.m. with the lighting of a 20-foot Christmas tree.

Food and drink vendors will be on-site as part of the festivities. Vendors include 7 Mares restaurant, Taste of Africa and Boston Soul Café.

“We are a close-knit community that celebrates our roots in diversity,” said Pastor Kenny Hoskins, executive director at Oakdale Neighbors. “Attendees will get a sense of that when they come to this event. We hope people will join us at this free event and celebrate with their neighbors, those who used to live here and those who want to feel connected to a community that appreciates diverse cultures.”

The Boston Square Community Christmas Tree Lighting event was organized by Oakdale Neighbors, Modern Hardware, Fuller Avenue Christian Reformed Church, New Dimensions Victory Center, Boston Square Neighborhood Association, Oakdale Park Church, Boston Square Church, 7 Mares, Boston Soul Café, EA Craftworks, Standard Lumber and Amplify GR.
