A local composer aims to take his work to Broadway with community help.

The Broadway 5K will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 24, at Allendale High School, at 10760 68th Ave. Funds raised will go toward sending David Dilsizian’s musical, “Dear Mom, I’m Gay!” to New York.

The event also will host local candle company Finding Refuge Candle Co. as a vendor, as well as Metta and Shanti, a boutique wellness spa that will provide free massages for participants.

“Dear Mom, I’m Gay,” recently played at Pride Arts and Jarvis Square Theater in Chicago and at Dog Story Theater in Grand Rapids. The musical is a semi-autobiographical romantic comedy about a young man’s coming out to his religious mother.

Dilsizian hopes to raise about $10,000 to bring cast, crew and musicians to New York. Should that goal be met, “Dear Mom, I’m Gay” will perform for Broadway producers in October. Tickets for the performance will be available in August.

Participants of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Broadway character for a family-friendly walk or run.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online for $20 or at the event for $25.
