Downtown Grand Rapids streets, parks and alleyways will be transformed into an urban disc golf course in September for a one-day-only tournament.

The Urban Disco tournament takes place on Saturday, Sept. 9 in downtown Grand Rapids. The course includes rooftop tee boxes and brick fairways setup throughout Grand Rapids’ Heartside and Arena neighborhoods. It will feature 18 holes, each with varying levels of difficulty.

Shotgun start times are at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and groups of five can register online for $250 per team. Individuals can register for $50. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Registration for Urban Disco is now open.

Players will be restricted to the use of official Urban Disco rubber discs, ensuring the utmost safety for business storefronts and residential units along the course.

All proceeds from the event will go to the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids to support its youth sports programs, and the event will include a youth clinic hosted by PDGA professionals.

Urban Disco is the brainchild of public relations firm Lambert, Edwards & Associates, whose CEO, Jeff Lambert, said the firm wanted to “create an event in our backyard that will nurture neighborhood growth and continue our cool city reputation.”

“West Michigan continues to pioneer unique opportunities to draw people to the city, creating innovative and artistic environments for an ultimate downtown Grand Rapids experience,” Lambert said.

While the tournament is limited to those 18+, Urban Disco will feature family-friendly portions, including the coaching clinic for kids and a putting green.

Scott Lewis, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, said the funds raised through the event will benefit area children, allowing them “access to more opportunities and also to learn about a new healthy activity that they can play in their neighborhood or nearby park.”
