Grand Rapids Heads to the Polls Today

Two city commission seats are up for grabs today.

Residents of Grand Rapids’ first and second wards have the opportunity to elect their representative for the next four-years.

Outgoing Commissioner Dave Shaffer’s first ward seat is available, with three candidates vying for the position: Catherine Mish, Christine Mullan and Kurt Reppart.

In the second ward, incumbent Joe Jones is running against challengers Tami VandenBerg and Michael Farage in an effort to keep the seat he was appointed to in 2016.

In both wards, the two candidates that gain the most votes move on to a run-off election on Nov. 7 unless one of the candidates gains 50 percent of the vote, in which case, that person is automatically elected.

The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

The city clerk’s office is offering residents three ways to view live election results tonight:

  • on the city clerk’s page
  • on the Grand Rapids Information Network – Comcast Channel 26
  • in the city hall city commission chambers on the ninth floor. City hall doors open at 7:30 p.m. and stay open until 10 p.m. Viewers can remain in the chambers until all votes have been tallied. City hall is located at 300 Monroe NW.
