Grand
Rapids Magazine Design Home 2008
— set on a sprawling, 70-acre
prairie in Byron Center — is anything but flat.
Since Scott Christopher, Inc. General
Manager Gordy Constantine and Grand Rapids-based architect
Wayne Visbeen, AIA, IIDA began envisioning the creation
of a family-tailored, Pacific Northwest-style estate
here, their collective vision has channeled vibrant
modernity.
Nature’s horizon serves as
inspiration for this open, yet distinctively integrated
floor plan.
“That’s where the idea
for the home’s octagonal shape was born,”
said Visbeen, founder of Visbeen & Associates, Inc.
“It allows every room to feel as though it’s
surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery that
Kent County has to offer.
”In fact, the homeowners chose
this vast site for its privacy; it also afforded them
the freedom to build the living space of their dreams
at its heart. Part of that dream incorporates a large
indoor/outdoor space with full-size swimming pool, patio,
bar and seating area complete with fireplace.
“Just as there are focal points
outside — a certain tree that glows red in the
fall, for example — some interior features naturally
draw the eye, including a well-placed breakfast nook,
and the open, winding staircase,” Constantine
noted.
To balance sophistication and friendliness
in living spaces throughout the home — from entertainment
areas, including a home theatre and small performance
stage, to the back entryway, nestled between two garages
and leading directly to the lower level — is the
2008 design team’s goal.
